The top 10 most requested languages

At agricultural translation agency AgroLingua, we translate from and into more than 30 languages, but of course some languages are requested more often than others. Can you guess which languages are most in demand? Our top 10 doesn’t consist of languages that are spoken by the majority of people worldwide, but reflects their significant influence on the economy and trade, especially in the agricultural sector. Number 10 will probably surprise you.

10. Finnish

Finnish probably isn’t the first language that comes to mind, as it is a lot less widely spoken than other languages like English or Spanish. However, agricultural translations into Finnish are still relevant. Forestry, for example, is of great value to the Finnish economy. Not surprising, since about 70% of the country is covered by forest. A large part of Finland's exports therefore include wood products and various types of paper.

9. Czech

Because of its diverse landscape and climate, the Czech Republic is very suitable for agriculture. It produces various types of corn, sugar beets, potatoes, and different fruit and vegetables. Therefore, the agricultural sector makes an important contribution to the Czech economy and also provides many jobs, especially in rural areas.

8. Danish

Denmark’s agricultural sector is flourishing. Despite being only a small country, it’s a major player in European agriculture and food production. This is partly because of their use of advanced agricultural technology and their focus on quality. It’s also a country that, just like the Netherlands, produces a lot of dairy: Denmark has a huge number of dairy farms, which means a lot of dairy products are exported. However, meat, fish and corn are also some of their most important export products.

7. Italian

Italy’s agricultural sector and food industry are incredibly important for its economy. Italy is one of the major producers of various agricultural trade goods in Europe, including wine, olive oil, tomatoes, pasta and citrus fruit. Besides that, the quality label ‘Made in Italy’ is very important for the export of agricultural and food products in Italy.

6. Polish

Poland is one of the main agricultural producers in Europe. This is because the country has a large area of farmland with very fertile soils, making it suitable for growing many different crops. In addition, Poland is a significant producer of livestock and meat and also exports dairy products, corn and vegetables.

5. Spanish

Spain’s agricultural sector is very diverse. The country is the largest producer of olive oil in the world for example, and is also known for its wine production. Spain is therefore home to several famous wine regions, such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero. In addition, Spain is an important exporter of citrus fruit, such as oranges and lemons, and vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers.

4. Dutch

The Netherlands may be a small country, but it’s the second biggest exporter of agricultural products in the world. It has a strong reputation for efficient agricultural practices and the use of innovative technologies in the sector. A lot of agricultural products are produced in the Netherlands, such as different types of dairy, fruit and vegetables, flowers and bulbs. Dutch cheese, flowers and vegetables are very popular products on the international market.

3. German

Germany has a diverse agricultural sector with a wide range of products, including potatoes, vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy products. Germany is also one of the biggest dairy producers in the EU. In addition, the demand for German meat products like pork and sausages is high throughout the world. These products are therefore often exported, including to the Netherlands.

2. French

Thanks to its varied landscapes, France is able to provide many different agricultural products. The country produces a wide range of crops, fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products. Of course, France is also world famous for its wine production. Some of the world’s most popular wines are produced in regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne.

1. English

It probably comes as no surprise that English is the most requested language. Although the agricultural sector in the United Kingdom is not as large as in some other parts of Europe, it still plays an important role in the economy and food supply of the United Kingdom. As English has been one of the most widely spoken languages in the world for many years and is used as the official language in many international companies and industries, English translations are essential.
